Getting Around Gen Con: Downtown Indianapolis Group Logistics

Gen Con runs July 30 through August 2, 2026, and it is the largest tabletop gaming convention in North America -- 70,000-plus attendees spread across the Indiana Convention Center, Lucas Oil Stadium, and the connected downtown hotel blocks. For a group, the challenge is not distance; downtown Indianapolis is compact. The challenge is density.

The geography helps you

The Convention Center connects under one roof to Lucas Oil Stadium and to a record twelve hotels via skywalks and direct links. If your block is in a connected hotel, a lot of the convention is walkable without ever going outside. Transport earns its keep at the edges: arrivals from IND, off-site events, group dinners, and the late-night returns.

Where it gets congested

Georgia Street and the surrounding one-ways carry heavy pedestrian volume all weekend, and hotel sally ports and loading zones fill fast at check-in and at the end of the exhibit-hall day. A vehicle that needs to reach a specific hotel entrance at 5 PM on the Friday of Gen Con is competing with every other vehicle doing the same thing.

How to move a group cleanly

• Confirm a specific entrance. "The hotel" is not a pickup point during Gen Con. Name the door.
• Stage early at peaks. For a group dinner or an off-site event, have the vehicle in position before the rush, not dispatched into it.
• Right-size the vehicle. One Sprinter that holds the whole party beats three rideshares that arrive separately and surge-priced.
• Plan the late return. Downtown rideshare at midnight on a convention Saturday is its own event; a held vehicle is not.
